ABOUT OUR REPORT

This report provides unmatched insights, trends, and benchmarks regarding the maintenance of heavy-duty equipment. We define the heavy-duty repair category as independent and internal shops focused on maintaining Class 6-8 vehicles, agricultural machinery, emergency vehicles, construction equipment, heavy machinery, commercial fleets, and more.

OUR METHOD

We analyzed user data from more than 1,000 individuals from the commercial freight, logistics, and repair industries; we also sampled more than 200 shops from across North America, Australia, and New Zealand for real-world shop data.

How Often Do Shops Assess Their Labor Rate?

We found that most shops assess their labor rate once a year (39%), while 13% of shops survey do not assess it at all.

Did Shops Raise Their Labor Rates In 2023?

Shops increased their labor rates in 2023 by about 9%, which amounted to roughly a $10 increase. Northeastern shops raised their labor rates by 15%, or an $18 increase in 2023.

Do Shop Have A Safety Program?

While 58% of shops do have a safety program, we found it concerning that 42% of shops did not have one. 61% of shops reported an accident in the past year.

GENDER BREAKDOWN.

While diesel repair is still a male-dominated industry, women are definitely catching up—they made up over a quarter of our respondents!

There's definitely a gender divide between who is typically turning wrenches and who is running the back of the house, but in our experience we're seeing that gap close in terms of overall management.

SHOP REVENUE IN 2022

In 2022, shops across North America averaged 37% growth. In 2023, shop growth was 27%.

Monthly Shop Revenue Changes (2020-2023)

The peaks and valleys of 2020 and 2021 were clearly caused by the pandemic, and while it can feel like that's long gone, we still see some signs of normalization over 2022 and 2023.

Technician Compensation.

In 2023, we found that 73% of shops reported paying their technicians hourly. The median hourly wage was $30/hr.

Average Parts Markup And Margin.

Shops in 2023 saw a 31% average markup on parts with a 24% margin.

Year-Over-Year Changes in Markup And Margin.

Year-over-year, we saw an overall 0.5% increase in markup and a 0.3% increase in margin.

Average Invoice Size in 2023.

Overall, shops reported seeing an average invoice amount of $1,066 in 2023.
